Changemakers of the Month: Alynn Miranda Fighting for Women's Rights in Latin America

Alynn Miranda's inspiring journey as an activist began in the state of Texas, where it was born during her mother's visit. However, her family's roots lie in Mexico, and it was in Mexico where Alynn spent most of her life. Growing up in Mexico allowed Alynn to witness firsthand the struggles faced by women in her community. However, it wasn't until she embarked on an exchange program, specifically the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program, in Europe and lived in Poland that she gained a deeper understanding of the disparities between cultures and the challenges faced by women globally.

Unity and Community Support

For Alynn, unity is paramount. She firmly believes that true change can only be achieved when communities come together, supporting one another and working towards a common goal. Alynn herself experienced the strength of unity when she moved from Mexico to the United States at the age of 17, chasing her dreams. Supported by her community of Latin American immigrants in Texas, she navigated a new culture, overcame language barriers, and achieved remarkable success. This experience fueled her passion for activism and the belief that together, people can create a more inclusive and equitable society.

Advocacy for Women's Rights: Alynn's activism primarily focuses on women's rights. She aims to raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by women in her community, combating misinformation and challenging stereotypes. Alynn passionately advocates for the recognition of feminism as a term and emphasizes the urgent need to address gender-based violence prevalent in Latin America. By creating a safer environment for women and encouraging dialogue, Alynn envisions a society free from the fear and harassment that have plagued her and countless others.

Facing Opposition and Perseverance

Throughout her activist journey, Alynn faced opposition and skepticism from society. Many people questioned her motivations, dismissed the existence of women's issues, and even ridiculed her efforts. However, Alynn refused to be deterred. Her activism began in 2018 when she organized the first March for Abortion Rights in her small hometown, with only three other women joining her. In the face of criticism and threats, she persevered, and over time, her movement gained traction. Witnessing the growth of the Women's Day March from a mere four participants to 500 empowered women in her city this year filled her heart with hope and reaffirmed her belief in the power of collective action.

The Role of Education

Education played a significant role in shaping Alynn's journey. While her experiences in the Mexican public school system were less favorable due to the lack of specialized teachers, her American citizenship provided her with access to scholarships and opportunities that empowered her. Alynn recognizes the need for educational systems worldwide to allow students to explore their interests and passions, rather than expecting them to follow a predetermined path. She firmly believes that extracurricular activities, sports, and other avenues of self-discovery should be encouraged, fostering well-rounded individuals who can contribute to society in their unique ways.

Revolucionvioletamx: A Platform for Change

Driven by her eye-opening experiences and her passion for creating change, Alynn launched her project, revolucionvioletamx. This platform is designed to raise awareness about domestic and gender-based violence, primarily in Latin American countries. Alynn recognized the need for bilingual resources that could bridge the gap between Spanish and English-speaking communities. Her aim was to ensure that the experiences and stories shared by women were accessible to all, transcending language barriers. Alynn's dedication and talent were further acknowledged when she won second place in the prestigious UNESCO worldwide contest with this groundbreaking project.

Alynn's Message and Conclusion

Alynn's message to fellow changemakers is to find something they are passionate about and connect with like-minded individuals. She emphasizes the importance of perseverance and the collective strength of united individuals striving for change. Alynn's journey is a testament to the power of activism and the potential to create a more inclusive and equitable society.
